Father’s Day weekend at Harbes Family Farm includes specialty items for dads and activities for the entire family.
Harbes Family Farm will support the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program SPAT (Southold Project in Aquaculture Training) project during Harbes’ June 15 – 16 Father’s Day Farm Fest event. SPAT volunteer members will be on hand to shuck fresh Peconic Bay oysters and to educate the public about the sensitivities of Long Island’s marine life. Fresh, raw oysters will be available to the public by making a donation to the SPAT program. The SPAT program trains volunteers to culture, plant, and monitor seed oysters, clams and scallops.
“We look forward to partnering with Harbes Farms to educate the public about the various aspects of aquaculture and our bays. SPAT volunteers always enjoy meeting new people and explaining how our programs work. It will be a fun weekend,” says SPAT Director, Kim Tetrault.
Being introduced at Harbes Family Farm and Vineyard during the Father’s Day weekend event will be beer from the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company. Staff from the Greenport brewery will be on hand to dispense their microbrew ales and explain the unique qualities of their products. Greenport Harbor Brewery, located in the working harbor village of Greenport on the East End of the North Fork, brews 100% of its beer in a renovated fire house in the heart of the village.
“We at Greenport Brewing strongly believe in the value of local farms, local produce, and well-made local beer,” says Richard Vandenburgh, one of the founders of Greenport Brewing. ”There is no better pairing than a well-made locally crafted beer with all that the East End has to offer.”
Themed events and live demonstrations by Cornell Cooperative Extension with hands on activities for kids include tin-smithing, how wool goes from a sheep to a sweater, and butter churning. In addition to shellfish and Greenport ales, there will be other foods on the menu for dads on Father’s Day weekend. All are accompanied by live music. Other family activities for kids, dads, and moms are: learning about bees in the bee observatory, lively singing hay rides, pig races, farm animal puppet shows, working border collie demonstrations, relay races, and other family oriented games and activities.
The spacious Wine Tasting Barn will be open for tastings and the public will have the chance to sample Harbes Vineyard’s new wine releases.
